The intermediate to advanced jump finds most players in a conundrum.
One of my biggest challenges is to convince my students that in order to truly become an advanced doubles player they must not only serve and volley behind their first or second serve especially against stronger opponents but to also get to the net every chance they get when receiving.
Unfortunately most intermediate players are more confident at the baseline hitting ground strokes than hitting volleys at the net. So when I inform them that the only way they are going to the next level is to get to the net behind every serve I am usually met with a lot of resistance.
As a general rule when someone has his or her back against the wall, one will have the tendency to do what is more comfortable but comfortable is not necessarily correct. Unfortunately for them the baseline is their comfort zone creating a false sense of security but they will NEVER I mean NEVER make the jump from an intermediate to an advanced doubles player.
